Beautiful Thoughts (I feel Beautiful)

To feel beautiful is to feel alive. To feel alive means that body and mind are confident, content, healthy. Poet Mary Oliver speaks to this eloquently in her poem called:

POEM OF THE ONE WORLD

“This morning
the beautiful white heron
was floating along above the water
and then into the sky of this
the one world
we all belong to
where everything
sooner or later
is a part of everything else
which thought made me feel
for a little while
quite beautiful myself.”

To feel beautiful is to feel desirable, lovable, confident, and worthy. And the really great thing, it is a feeling—not a condition, and so is available to everyone in the world. It is not something other people give us—it is a gift we give ourselves. It helps for others—parents, friends, etc. to tell us we are wanted and desirable, but that is not essential. We all know physically attractive people with low self worth who feel unloved. We also know some physically plain people who light up a room with their presence, their smile, their curiosity. They feel— and are attractive. Better to feel beautiful and confident than to be physically beautiful and fearful.

So, to repeat, feeling beautiful is available to everyone, a gift to oneself, and a path to self acceptance and joy. As the saying goes, “ beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” which makes confident and friendly people beautiful.
